Book Recommendations for Earth Education Week I would like to offer a couple of reading suggestions for Earth Education Week, one title is new (published in 2008) and one is not-so-new (published in 1854).

The first book I want to recommend is CO2 Rising by NYU professor Tyler Volk. Volk is an expert in earth system dynamics and his newest book focuses on the carbon cycle and the roles played by carbon dioxide. I saw professor Volk speak last month at the U of U after a Press Conference addressing a recently proposed climate change resolution in Utah (see link and details below for HJR 12*) - it was refreshing to return strictly to the science of the matter in the midst of frustrating partisan and political turmoil.

I was thoroughly impressed with Volk’s presentation material, humble attitude, and empirical approach to the lecture and Q & A session. It seems strange to be recommending a book that I haven’t yet read myself (I’m currently on the waiting list for CO2 Rising at the library), but I feel comfortable doing so based on my recent encounter with professor Volk and the broad praise I’ve seen for his book.

My second book recommendation is an absolute classic: Walden by Henry David Thoreau. This is on my short list among the best books of all time. Thoreau provides enlightening reflections on our relationship to nature, among many other things, and I find his insights still remarkably applicable given that the book is over 150 years old. In short, if you haven’t read Walden, then do so!

Does anyone else have any recommendations, books or otherwise, for Earth Education Week? Respond here!

RE:Book Recommendations for Earth Education Week Walden is a classic I haven't read- it's now on the top of my list. Thanks Tyler.
For a local source of environmental news, I like Recycle Utah's Tasty Morsel podcasts. For climate change related news, I receive an email blast from the Environmental and Energy Study Institute; visit their website to subscribe- www.eesi.org. Does anyone have some good blogs they read?

RE:Book Recommendations for Earth Education Week I enjoy the science-based discussions on the Skeptical Science blog (link below). The site is well-maintained and regularly includes technical posts on various climate science topics.
